Recommended kinds include Epsom, alum, and table salt, though iodized salts don't make as large of crystals as the other types. Instead of making a single crystal, why not create a cupful? Make your salt solution, then pour over cut up sponges or charcoal briquettes in the base of the container. Stir in a little vinegar, and watch crystal formations grow overnight.Pour enough to saturate the sponges without submerging them. The crystal will grow more slowly this time, since a little water will need to evaporate before the salt grains are forced to attach to the crystal. If everything works out, the crystal will keep the same shape as it grows.

They were grown from the exact same salt solution – in which I had added a teaspoon of Epsom salt. At first, I thought it was due to different types of salt. So I tried comparing two types of salt – sea salt and rock salt.
Shake the jar gently and tilt it so the salts settle on an angle. Then, add one to two inches of another color, and tilt the jar to help the new layer settle at the same angle. Use two cups of epsom salts, two cups of borax, ½ a cup of kaolin clay powder, and essential oils of your choice. This step is optional, but it will help to dry out the bath salts and remove clumps. It’s important to bake it on low heat, however, to prevent the oils and fragrances from burning off. Water molecules move faster and spread farther apart when heated, which allows other materials like salt or sugar to dissolve in them more easily.

If you increase the temperature while these salt crystals are forming, the base will get wider, curving outwards. At the start, I promised you’d see all sorts of pyramid salt crystals, some narrow, others wide. I told tales of Mayan pyramids, flowers and Eiffel Towers. There were probably too many nucleation points, causing thousands of tiny seed crystals to form instead of a few big, transparent ones. Maybe there was a bit of dust in the solution, or the solution was slightly saturated, or you accidentally caused some salt to enter the solution.
Repeat the process until you cannot get any more salt to dissolve. The final salt solution should not have any residue of salt. This is called a supersaturated salt solution.
When you dissolve this much salt into water, it becomes a saturated salt solution. Some people have told me it’s hard to get uniodized table salt. If so, you can also use sea salt with no additives .

“Supersaturated” means the solution contains more solute than the solvent can hold at a given temperature. When a solution is warm, it is capable of dissolving more of a solute—like sugar, salt, or a mineral—than it can when it’s cool. No matter which method you try, you'll need to use a hot stove and boiling water, so adult supervision is advised.
If you add color in after the baking, your salts will blend together and partially dissolve, causing sticking in your container. Make sure to spread them thoroughly and to mix well, so that all of your salts come into contact with the oil. An adult pours the water and salt into the glass jar.
